How this started.
Berez began with one wardrobe: mine.
NEW YORKI grew up in New York, where everyone takes the train and your clothes speak before you do. In my early twenties I felt like I wasn’t being taken as seriously as my peers, so I set out to learn why, and ended up falling in love with men’s traditional tailoring. I bought suits, took them to tailors, and chased a fit that never quite revealed itself. Out of desperation, I found makers overseas, ordered samples and, after many mistakes, built my own wardrobe. Friends noticed, and asked me to do the same for them.
THE FIRST ONEMy first client was Cesar, a close friend. He has high, broad, muscular shoulders, and the first suit I made him had balance issues that couldn’t be fixed through alterations, so I remade it. It taught me how the way a jacket relies on the shoulders, and that nothing leaves until it is right. He has been back several times since to continue building his wardrobe.
MILANIn the second half of 2022 I travelled, with my family, to Milan to study traditional men’s tailoring, and spent those months building a three-piece suit under a master tailor who corrected my work at every step. I didn't go to change what Berez makes. I went to understand, from the inside, what makes a garment fit well and feel good to wear.
That understanding is what you get. I read a body differently now: where a jacket needs to give through the chest and waist so it holds its shape without holding you in, where a sleeve should sit and how it should feel when you reach, how full a trouser should be cut to fall cleanly and stay comfortable, and how its width should balance against your shoes. None of that shows up as a line on your order, but you will feel it every time you put the garment on.
WHAT I LOVEIn the work, it is the fitting: the moment someone sees themselves in the mirror in something made for them. There is usually a pause. They look like themselves, only more so.
Outside it, most of my time belongs to my wife and our two children, which is exactly how I want it. I love jazz, hip hop, simple cocktails and complex conversation.
